Backing up files is the smartest thing a computer owner can do. Storing them in the cloud means less investment upfront and unlimited storage that can be accessed from any place. Thanks to the intense competition among the cloud backup services, you can get unlimited storage for just a few bucks.

But, it isn’t like cloud backup services are the silver bullet. Some tend to revise their pricing plans, throttle upload bandwidth and so on. Still, given that the domain is in its infancy, things should improve over time. Follow me after the fold to check out some of the coolest cloud backup solutions available.

I have a confession to make: I never really gave Microsoft Paint a chance. When I first started out as a web developer, I thought I needed the best of the best and got a copy of Photoshop 7. When I did try to go back to it on machines where it was the only option, it seemed trivial and lacking. I did realize I didn’t always need Photoshop though, and gave some other image editors a whirl. In this roundup, let’s take a loot at some alternatives to Paint for both image creation and photo editing/touch-ups.

Despite what fanboys from the rival camp claim, Windows is a self contained operating system in most aspects. It has gotten better with every new version and given the number of legacy hardware and software it supports, it’s no mean feat to make the operating system so user friendly. Yes, there are some shortfalls when it comes security and maintenance.

But since all of us don’t need power user features and there literally are a ton of apps to bridge the gap, I don’t usually understand what the fuss is all about. While not very pretty looking, these apps get the job done and in most cases are available for free too. After the break we have compiled a list of awesome apps that help boost the performance of your PC. Do read on!

Microsoft has, for quite a while, been a key player in the gaming industry; PC Gaming is a thriving platform, and the Xbox 360 almost dominates the console space. Consequently, speculation was rampant on the subject of a possible handheld Xbox console, or some other venture into mobile gaming.

Microsoft’s answer came in the Windows Phone 7 platform, in the form of a dedicated Xbox Live application, accompanied with a very strong selection of titles. Below you will find a list of my personal favourites, all of which I would recommend to any Windows Phone owner.

Most modern operating systems feature similar “desktop” paradigms. Windows is no exception to this. However, as many users notice, the desktop quickly fills up with icons and other shortcuts that you don’t really need. This leads to an organizational nightmare, and the purpose of the desktop, providing quick access to the files, folders, and applications you need, is defeated.

Furthermore, organization is limited to the grid system. There is no way to really “group” certain items together, and no organization beyond making separate sections for your groups. This can lead to confusion and it takes longer to find the things you need. This is where Stardock Fences comes into the picture.

There is no dearth of freeware apps for Windows. Over decades of its dominance in the operating system market, Windows has been a very popular development platform and enjoys the biggest – albeit dispersed – library of software applications among all the operating systems. The fallout of this humongous volume of options though, is the fact that finding the apps that you want – and that work exactly the way you want – becomes extremely difficult.

Through years of trial & error with trying out new apps, I’ve found myself uninstalling or deleting over 90% of what I try. There are a select few though, that I’ve stuck with. These are not you popular apps with millions of users, nor are these made by big time developers. These are all smaller apps that don’t do everything under the sun, but absolutely rock and what they do.
