Over the forthcoming months at Windows Appstorm, we will be looking at each integral part of your computer: from the minor parts to the most important pieces of your machine. We will be reviewing the best choices available to help you make the best choice when building your next PC.

In our first edition, we will be looking at the best on offer in terms of computer cases. An important part of your computer, it needs to be suited towards your certain needs to control and stabilize the other hardware. In this article, I will be looking at four different price bands, choosing my favourite case from each.

Hopefully some of them will appeal to you! Read on to find out!

Throughout this article, I will base my choices on the key features of a reliable case, giving each case a rating out of five. The evaluated features include:

  • Value for Money
  • Functionality
  • Ease of installation
  • Aesthetics

Hopefully these specifications will distinguish the great cases from the poor, helping you to decide how much to spend on your next purchase. (All prices taken from Amazon)

This being the cheapest price band, you aren’t expecting to get much for your money. However, I feel the case I’ve chosen will surely satisfy all your simple needs and desires. I’m choosing the: Coolermaster Elite 430.

The Coolermaster Elite is a fully-black case which is built with a wide expanse of space, giving you enough room to even fit some of the biggest hardware inside. Equipped with a 120mm front and rear fan, with a side and bottom fan too, you can easily keep your computer cool and running at a high rate. Other interesting features include: a large transparent window and a tool-free installation system.

  • Value for Money- 4/5 – For under $50, this an affordable case.
  • Functionality-3/5 – The case gives you many helpful utilities for a simple and effective system.
  • Ease of Installation-4/5 – With a tool-free assembly fiddling around with screwdrivers won’t be a problem. (However in this market, these come as a given)
  • Aesthetics-3/5 – A strong black colour and a transparent side window help to create an uncomplicated layout.

For this band, I’m going with the: NZXT Phantom 410. This case is overall my favourite for the sheer combination of quality and price. Being a case for only $99.99, this excited me. In my opinion, this next installment into NZXT range is an exquisite piece of engineering.

One thing to bear in mind is that this is primarily designed as a gaming case. Don’t worry though, many functions are just as necessary in a regular computer. Ok, the first extraordinary feature is the beauty of the exterior, magnificently designed and available in a wide range of colours. This case is never going to disappoint you in the looks department.

Features which you should bear in mind: Dual USB 2.0/3.0 and 30W fan controller on the exterior. A cooling capacity of eight fans and the ability to convert to water cooling. A unique feature I loved was the facility to angle fans to a specific part of your computer, concentrating your cooling power.

The whole case is highly advanced in that you can remove most parts with a flick of the wrist. Another feature which is helpful is the cable management system, containing special cutouts suited to keeping a clean space. Overall, this a great case which any user would love to own. NZXT is definitely “bringing sexy back”.

For under $200, I’m going with another Coolmaster case the: Coolermaster HAF X Case. On the outside, you have features such as: USB 3.0, a sliding safety cover for your power switch and removable dust filters. Going inside the left panel, you have more dust filters on your 200m fan and massive fan sections on the roof. This case has an extremely superior air system to anything else of the same value, with the facility to upgrade to water cooling as well.

Containing nine expansion slots in the rear, you have enough room for the biggest of boards. The installation of this case is superb, giving you the potential to quickly swap between hard drives with the “SATA dock”. As with the other cases, the HAF X comes with a tool free design and an extensive cable management system.

Entertaining a huge amount of space and equipped with easy functionality, this is a great case which shouldn’t be passed over.

Finally, at the highest price band we have the: Corsair Obsidian 800D. Being the highest priced case included, this case is bound to offer many desirable attributes. The key quality being that the case is built to last. A steel structure with a matte black covering and aluminum plates help to give this case a proficient structure and stimulating looks.

It’s also pretty huge! Being able to fit everything you ever need inside is a key feature which most consumers will love. Compatible with water cooling and many fans allows you to always keep your heat down and your performance up. On the roof you can set up three fans, with another two on bottom, as well as containing helpful dust filters.

The ease of access is brilliant in this case. From the front face, you can easily access four hard drives which are secretly hidden behind a black door. To look inside, you only need to press a button on the back opening the side door. Equipped with five bays in front and seven PCI slots in the back, you wouldn’t need much more.

Inside, it’s capacious, incomparable to most cases on the mark. It also provides you with as many rubber grommets as you would need, suited to every type of internal hardware. The case also boasts one of the best wire management systems I’ve ever seen. Exploring the interior, you have a huge array of interesting features, from fans specifically designed to cool the hard drives, to the power supply having its own intake and exhaust, separated from the rest of your case.

Corsair also provide a two year warranty on most cases, and give you access to their highly acclaimed customer service and technical team. Paying this amount of money, you’d expect a good team and that is a sure thing.
