USB drives. Few people predicted that they would become as popular and as successful as they did. These portable storage devices can be used not only to move files between computers, but also act a security tools and can even house your entire software library.

We have covered various portable apps in the past, but you may well be wondering just what the point of USB-based software is. I thought I’d take the time to explain why I think portable apps are not only so useful, but also very important.

The failure of a hard drive can be one of the most devastating things to happen to any computer user – within the realms of computing, at least – particularly if you are unprepared and have not been particularly diligent at creating regular backups.

Should the worst happen to you, you could sent your drive off to a team of data recovery experts, but you’ll have to pay a fairly hefty fee if you want your files back. But there are plenty of occasions when your files may not be accessible due to a no-physical problem with your drive, and TestDisk is a free tool that could get your data back without the need to part with a penny.

What’s the most important component of your computer? RAM? Processor? Monitor? How about your hard drive? As well as being home to Windows itself, your hard drive is where you store all of your documents and it is a piece of hardware that it in constant use whenever your computer is switched on.

The problem with any hard drive is that files become fragmented – they are broken up into a series of small chunks which have to be pieced together whenever they are accessed. This is a serious bottleneck to performance and it is not a problem that can be tackled without the right tool.
