Windows Phone Elite: Useful Utilities

In the Windows Phone Elite series we often look at apps which you would use all the time. These have included finance management apps and platform games, although, something we are yet to look at is the smaller apps. There is a wealth of these in the Windows Marketplace and even though they may be basic in concept; they can sometimes help us an awful lot.

Read on the find out what we think are the best utilities for your Windows Phone.

StopWatch

The Windows Phone operating system doesn’t come with a built in stopwatch or countdown timer — this is annoying. Having a stopwatch can often come in handy and this meant looking for an application — Stopwatch was one of the first I found. This app gives you all the features you could possibly need and looks good at the same time. I couldn’t really ask for anything more.

Unit Converter

We need to convert between different units on a regular basis. With metric and imperial systems, it’s often hard to remember how to convert each individual measurement. Unit Converter cuts out all of the hard mathematical work and quickly lets you convert between different measurements. I mainly love this application because of its utter simplicity. Compared to apps of the same type, Unit Converter is effortless and easy to use.

Scientific Calculator

Windows Phones have as standard, a basic scientific calculator and this is great if you don’t need many functions. But, as a Maths student I needed something which would be sufficient enough to keep up with my studies, and sometimes I forget my standard calculator. This is an app which worked perfectly for me and has remained a great backup in them situations where I’m forgetful. A fantastic app for the avid mathematician.

Pocket Recorder™

Being able to record voice on your Windows Phone is something we are unable to do — we really do miss out on some parts of software. Pocket Recorder is something I love to use during lectures or to make voice memos for myself. With built in editing software and the ability to quickly transfer files over to your computer I’m always in control of my recordings. Pocket Recorder perfectly fits into my daily life and is vital towards my studies.

Flashlight-X

A torch is a utility which can sometimes be cumbersome and annoying to carry. And to get the perfect balance between brightness and weight is often very hard. There are many different options for flashlights on your phone, but I found that many of these are really poor — then I found Flashlight-X. This is a fantastic application which provides an extremely bright and stable light source. I’ve used it on many occasions and I would be lost without it.

Level

Something I don’t use that much, but does get used sometimes is Level. Once calibrated the app will instantly be able to tell you whether a surface is straight or not. The app doesn’t have any options and is fully built for purpose. This isn’t going to be an app for everyone, but for those that need it, it’s available.

Mouse Remote

There’s limitations to having a wired mouse on our computers and sometimes we want to break past these. Mouse Remote allows you to almost fully control your PC. Once connected your phone can act as either a mouse or keyboard and even lets you view your computer screen. This app is also completely free and easy to set up. If you use both a computer and a Windows Phone you should download this instantly.

Metro Compass

The final app I’ll be looking at is a compass and this is something I strongly recommend to everyone. Metro Compass incorporates the Metro UI perfectly and will always point you in the right direction. Again this app requires calibration which isn’t an impossible task. A nice app for getting out of sticky situations.
