The Best 35 Social Apps For Your Windows Phone

Social networks are extremely prevalent in today’s society. You’d probably find it hard to find one person who didn’t have a prominent presence on at least one. However, the market is dominated by the big networks such as Facebook and Twitter. While in this article I will cover these, the big focus will on social networks which are a little less known.

The Windows Phone network gives users a humongous amount of choice so not exploring different options would just be frivolous. Read on to find out about the networks I recommend!

Twitter

While the standard Twitter application isn’t my favourite, it still has its merits. Nearly everything you would need in a Twitter client is available to you at the touch of a button, and for first time Twitter users this is probably the best option. The overall design is sleek, however, for me this client doesn’t give enough customisation.

Kik Messenger

Kik Messenger allows users to message friends on every mobile platform. After linking to your friends through a username you’re free to message them as much as you like. With push notifications and a beautiful interface you’ll probably never need your standard text messaging service again. This app saves money as well as making the process easier.

Mxit

For readers in Africa, Mxit is probably your best option in terms of social networks. Mxit is the biggest social network in Africa and is completely free. The app focus’ heavily on both the social network side and the messaging side so you get the best of both worlds. One interesting feature is that you have a mood bar where you can gauge your state of mind.

Pin+

Pin+ is a non-official application which lets you use Pinterest on your Windows Phone. As the network lacks an official version, you’ll be pleased to know you can still do everything you would like to — the crossover is just brilliant. The main reason I use this over other Pinterest apps is the fact that the interface perfectly matches that of the webpage.

Ask.fm

Ask.fm is an app which has become very popular with Facebook and Twitter users. Members would post their link to their followers/friends and these people would be able to send them anonymous questions. This is a great time waster as it makes the whole process more exciting with the anonymous element. With this app you don’t need to use the webpage anymore.

Word Press

WordPress is a fantastic tool that we use here on Appstorm. However, when I’m on-the-go I need quick access to WordPress sometimes. Although, the web version really doesn’t cut it and I often found myself frustrated when using it. Once I found the app though my whole experience changed. I can now easily reach my articles with no fuss at all. If you’re a constant WordPress user then this app is a must.

Steam Center

Not only is Steam a fantastic gaming platform for thousands of users across the globe, but, it also has a thriving community. With members joining clans and groups this service has to be good enough to allow people to communicate. But, as Steam is a PC only application, it’s hard to reach people when you’re not at your desk. With this app you can quickly explore profiles and Leaderboards at the touch of a button.

There is also a Pro version of this app which doesn’t have adverts.

Foursquare

Foursquare is an app which is fantastic. Commonly used on iOS devices, Foursquare is yet to see major success on the Windows Phone platform — it really should of though. This version of the app is by far much more usable then the iOS equivalent and has actually allowed me to use the app more than I ever did in the past.

LINE

Similar to Kik Messenger this is an app which gives users the ability to send as many messages as they like for free. There are two reasons why I included LINE though. Firstly, the interface is one of the best. Adding pictures to user’s profiles is an easy process and doing this makes everything look right. The second is that on LINE you can send fun stickers to users. This makes messaging fun.

Social Mints

An app which has already seen success, including picking up awards, is Social Mints. Giving you the ability to track social trends and important events in the news is an exciting task. Each story is defined as a “Mint” and users rate this on four different elements: Strength, Sentiment, Passion and Reach. Each one is defined differently so that you can the Mint’s prevalence in the news.

Skype

Everyone reading this article has probably heard of Skype or even used it at some point. Whether you have a front camera, rear camera, or both you can still use this app. Showing friends what you’re seeing instead of just your face can sometimes be quite fun. Skype is a fantastic app which should be your only choice for video calling.

Pigeon

For Tumblr users it’s necessary that you can access your feed at all times of the day. And while Tumblr may not offer an Official application, there are a few options out there which are just as good — Pigeon is one of these. This simple app gives you all the bells and whistles, allowing you to control all of your settings. I’ve even found this to perform better than the Official Android version.

IM+

IM+ is a service which lets you combine all of your instant messaging apps into one single format. Including, Facebook, Yahoo, Google Talk and many others. From the main page you can quickly change between networks meaning there is no need to go through multiple apps ever again.

Omegle

Omegle is a great web app for wasting time. By clicking one button you can find yourself talking to a random stranger across the internet. While this app may not be Official it still gives you everything you need. Being able to quickly choose which type of person you would like to speak to is an exciting experience.

LinkedIn

One of the most popular social networking sites is LinkedIn. With a community of 16 million members this thriving service is well developed — the same can be said about the app. This Official app is fantastic for keeping an eye on your account and possible to only use this. In my opinion, if you’re a Windows Phone user, I would never use any other version of the LinkedIn service.

Outsider

Outsider is an app for users who either are new to the OS or want to learn more. Winning the award for the 2012 Best Free App, Outsider is fantastic at its core concept. Equipped with useful information and the ability to login to Foursquare, Twitter and Facebook instantly, Outsider is one of the best hub apps you can ever have.

Whats App

Earlier I looked at Kik Messenger, Whats App is another messaging app which follows the same concept. I’ve gathered that this service is more formal while Kik feels like an app you would use with your friends. With Whats App you get the service displayed in a different format.

InTouch

One of the main reasons I chose the Windows Phone network was due to the Live Tiles feature. This is a beautiful and easily customised display which is great for navigation. Intouch is one of the only applications which lets you create your own tiles then share them with your friends. When making your tile you can choose between hundreds of designs as well as editing the front and the back.

Twabbit

Recently I covered two alternative Twitter applications on Windows.Appstorm, one of these was Twabbit. Twabbit is a highly customisable application which lets you employ gesture settings to make usage much more adaptable towards your own needs.

Rowi

The other Twitter client I looked at was Rowi. And while I did eventually choose to opt with Twabbit, Rowi still has a group of great features. Opposed to Twabbit, Rowi has a simple approach and doesn’t try to complicate the basics. If you’re looking for a Twitter client which is easy to configure and use, Rowi should be your choice.

WPGram

One app that I severely miss on the Windows Phone operating system is Instagram. Such a great photo sharing client really should be available on this platform. With WPGram you are able to view profiles and like/comment on pictures. However, the factor which you still lack is the ability to upload pictures — which is annoying. At the moment though this is the best option for users missing Instagram.

Blueprints

Earlier I looked a Pigeon, a Tumblr client, although, another great option is Blueprints. Primarily built for Windows 8 devices, Blueprint is basically an exact copy of the Official app which is available for other operating systems. I love how much detail the developers have put into this project and it has definitely paid off. For Tumblr users, trying out Blueprints is a must!

Cloudsdale is a network with around 10,000 users which share different interests. You can navigate to your favourite categories then speak to people who share a similar interest. Everything on this service is fast and this in turn lets you quickly communicate with others.

Mindtalk

Mindtalk follows the same path as Clousdale except that the interests that you communicate in are far more specific. Mindtalk also has a far more advanced interface which is organised perfectly for reaching the places you want to go. I commonly visit this service so I talk to like-minded others about topics in the news.

Photoplay

WPGram was an imitation of Instagram. Although, if you want the best choice for an image social network, Photoplay is by far the better app. This service is available on every operating system and to be honest, I prefer it to Instagram. This is because the interface is far more friendly and the image editing experience is much better suited towards peoples’ needs. It’s also nice that you don’t need to crop the image to a 1:1 ratio every single time.

SCRUFF

For the gay community the only good choice for a social networking app is SCRUFF. This app is fantastic for meeting new people and even tells you if any members are nearby. Being able to quickly message and communicate is a great activity.

Follower Spy

For the avid Twitter users who like to know everything, a tool which allows them to track who followers/unfollowers them is necessary. With this app you can track all of the activity and even Tweet them asking why they performed that action. This can be helpful if users are automatically unfollowing you due to errors with Twitter.

Vopium

Calling abroad is an expensive task and for a lot us the price is far more than we afford. Even if you can afford to pay £5/per minute to speak to your friends, you really don’t want to. Through Vopium you can save up to 94% on international calls and you can even use the app when you don’t have an internet connection. For frequently calls then Vopium is really a must.

Ping Me

PingMe is a service which allows you to share a range of different mediums to friends. These include: location, video message and voice notes. Viadeo

One of the most powerful networking tool for the workplace is Viadeo. Everyone on the service is defined as a “professional” and the main concept is to link with others in different jobs all over the world. While Viadeo might not be the best tool for linking up with friends, its fantastic for those users who love to seek new contacts in a desired industry.

Facebook Pro

The standard Facebook application on the Windows OS is one of the poorest Official apps I have ever seen. I hate how everything is organised and it really doesn’t suit the way I like to use Facebook. However, luckily for me there is a huge range of alternative options. My favourite is Facebook Pro, this app actually makes me want to use the service by providing me with an experience which is second to none.

Pepper

Music social networking is something I haven’t covered yet and I really couldn’t leave it out. One service which is only available in the UK is Pepper. Here users search for gigs and events in the country then publishe them to their profile page. Through this you can look up other users and find out their tastes and even invite friends to the events you’re attending.

didlr

Didlr is an app which appears like Paint from the onset. You are able to draw anything you like using a range of tools. However, the fun part is that you can share these “didls” anywhere you like as they are compatible with social networks, SMS and much more. One element which made me laugh a lot was the slogan “Don’t just ‘draw something’, draw ANYTHING!,” a direct comment towards the highly popular Draw Something application.

Let’s Meet

Let’s say you want to meet a friend at a cafe in town. Through Let’s Meet you can find a place and pick a time, then the app will email or SMS the friend all the details. This includes addresses and everything else you would need for the perfect meetup. This avoids confusion and bring some variety to the places you meet.

Talk.to

While some apps have either given you free SMS or combined your instant messaging services, Talk. to rolls all of this into one. Having all of these contacts in one address book could become confusing, but for users who want everything in the same place this app is a dream.
