10 Windows Phone Apps to Increase Your Learning Capacity

Over the past few months I have been busy with my studies revising for a variety of different subjects. During this time, I have been able to use many different Windows Phone Apps for support. All these applications helped me to keep in control of all my work to revise the best possible way!

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a free application which allows you to search through an enormous video database. This library contains hundreds of videos ranging from a variety of different subjects. Helping you to primarily focus on a subject with an easy and effective video guide.

Khan Academy has really helped me develop and understand maths techniques, which I had struggled with in the past. It is well designed with a straightforward layout, overall a great application.

Flashcards+

Flashcards+ is an utility which allows you to create your own flashcards, to help you continue learning wherever you are. This replacement for hand written cards is well set out and has a wealth of features. Features such as: accessing the app’s pre-made database of cards and studying a wide range of subjects quickly and efficently.

Flashcards+ is my favourite app overall, perfectly designed towards your certain needs and giving you the ability to learn on-the-go or in the comfort of your home. In my opinion this is a necessary application for all Windows Phone Users and will surely help you in any situation.

Spelling Practice 2

Spelling Practise 2, is an app which allows you to you improve your spelling skills, by showing you a variety of popular words. This app provides helpful and clearly programmed voice commands to initiate improvement. Containing a database of over 1000 words. Your general spelling skills are sure to improve.

Out of all the grammar apps, this one is definitely the most capable and simple to use. Building up your skills slowly and steadily to a higher level of competence.

Online Education

Online Education is an application which is very similar to Khan Academy, offering step-by-step guidance videos. The app helps you to improve in specific subjects, from the compulsory subjects such as Maths to the extremes of Astronomy and World Economics.

In my opinion, this app is an improvement on Khan Academy, offering some bonus features. It alerts you when extra videos are uploaded and gives you access to an even wider range of content. If you’re looking for a more complex video database. Online Education is the way to go.

simple Learning

This application allows you to customise your revision to your own needs, giving you access to a wide variety of content. Materials such as practise questions, vocabularies and an insightful memory training system allow you to learn through a variety of different techniques.

Overall, this application is invaluable to students, my favourite feature being the practise quizzes. The benefits of this being controlling difficulty and a simple layout. Expertly designed with the ability to use many different forms of learning, this is a great addition to your arsenal of resources.

Schedule

This app does what it says on the tin, scheduling all your exams/revision around a manageable calendar. Allowing you to set notes, times and organise your time over the future weeks. This application is full of helpful features.

During my time with Schedule, I have effectively balanced my time for all my lessons and revision. Helpful reminders to arrange my equipment, allowed me to always have what I needed. All in all, this application was a highly improved version of my paper copy, which aided me superbly throughout this stressful period of time.

Jack of Math

Jack of Math is an interesting approach to mastering mathematical skills for adults and children. Providing you with mixed difficulty puzzles to improve your skills over time, a feature which has great benefits. An extra positive is the ability to view graphs showing your overall score and accuracy. A great value app.

Even if you’re not a keen mathematician this app will hopefully revitalise your skills, giving you a helpful introduction to simple questions through a quick fire quiz. A feature which I loved was being able to differentiate between difficulties suited towards your skill and confidence with a certain topic.

Grade Calculator

Grade Calculator is an application which can help you to predict and record the grades you hope to achieve. It allows you to enter all your classes and target grades as well as calculating your overall “dream grade”.

One unique feature was the ability to show you what you needed to do to stay on target. Helpful tips and guidance to achieve the grade you need. Even in the free version you have access to all the same aspects except being able to set up multiple years. Well designed with thought through features, a stupendous application.

Word of the day

Ever wanted to increase your range of vocabulary gradually and effectively? If so, “Word of the day” may be the perfect application for you. Giving you access to a different word every day with concise pronunciation and a guide on how to use it, this app is brilliant.

If you learn a different word every day of the year your vocabulary is sure to improve. This application allows you to do this efficiently and easily.

SAT Vocabulary

Primarily, this app is aimed at SAT students, although it can still be used by anyone. SAT Vocabulary pride themselves on “dramatically enhancing your English word vocabulary in a short period of time”, giving you the ability to improve your skills quickly and comfortably.

Vaguely similar to “Flashcards+” this application sorts the “SAT Specific” words into an easy to read form. A desirable feature which SAT vocabulary possesses is that it associates your mind with the words by using simple repetitive patterns. Strengthening the neuron pathways within your brain.

All of the applications I have chosen to review during this article have been general learning apps. If you need an App for a specific subject take a look in the Windows Marketplace. They provide many other apps which are primarily suited towards one subject.

In conclusion, I hope some of these apps will help you to elevate your learning to the next level. Even if you aren’t currently studying, I personally advise you to download some of these apps. Using them once a week will improve your memory and cognitive level making you more prepared for that next job role or challenging exam.
