There are people who can’t get through a day without taking a peek at Reddit. I realized I was one of them a while ago. Browsing through Reddit through a browser in Windows Phone can be a huge headache though, do you not agree?
For those who love Reddit, Baconit is an excellent Metro styled app that makes redditing easy and much more usable from a Windows phone. Now, let us dig in to the features of Baconit and make sure this is a “worth downloading” app.
You can easily find Baconit in the top rated part of Windows Marketplace. It has over 6400 reviews and a 4.5 stars! That was quite reassuring and the best part of the app is that it is not ad supported. Baconit is a tiny app weighing in at about 1Mb.
When you run the app for the first time, it configures itself. Baconit gives you an option of auto updating and blocking NSFW posts if you opt. The interface is clean and crisp with the Reddit mascot, Snoo, as the background which sure is classy.
I love that the app isn’t really complicated and is very to the point. And to make the app even more easy to use, which is really not necessary, new tips pops up here and there whenever it is relevant. The main screen of Baconit breaks down in to 3 major screens viz. reddits, account and recent.
Looking at Sub Reddits
Reddits is the home screen of Baconit. It simply displays all the subreddits of the site. Of course not all of the subreddits can be displayed since there are literally hundreds of thousands of them but it displays the famous, most subscribed ones.
If you are interested in a subreddit that is not displayed in the main screen, you can search for it and “add it to your local”. That just means that adding it to your app and not your account. It also gives you the luxury of adding the subreddit specifically to your account so that you can access those from other devices too.
The Smart Bar located at the bottom of the app is a big help especially because of the high number of subreddits and the complexity of finding them through your phone. You can either give a search name, or a subreddit’s name or a URL to find the exactly what you are looking for.
Reddits screen consists of 15+ ones and you can make your favorite one to be listed in the top by just starring them. In the main screen, right before the Reddits’ name, tiny stars are available. By tapping on them, you are basically bookmarking it and making sure it appears at the top of the list.
Account and Recent
What is the point of Reddit without having the power of upvoting a post to its glory or down voting the lame stuff? For that, you certainly need an account. If you have an account, you can login from the app so that you can comment and upload your own stuff from anywhere. You can also search for subreddits, view your profile history and all your messages.
Recents merely gives a glimpse of everything you have browsed in the recent past. Baconit has designed the ‘recents’ portion in Metro style. The sad thing is you can’t delete a specific recent item and thus you can’t erase the evidence of reading any embarrassing posts. Bummer.
Redditing Via Baconit
The functionality of Baconit is more or less the same as viewing the posts through the system browser. When you tap on a subreddit, you are taken to a new screen with the theme and accent color same as that of your Windows phone.
Here again, the screen breaks down in to the traditional hot, new, top and controversial. Of course you know what these things mean else why would you be reading about Baconit?
The title of the posts are displayed in white and only when you tap on that, you can read the story. In order to interact with the screen, you have to tap on the screen. I don’t really understand the point of that. The comments are red and you can up vote or down vote right from the main screen of the posts.
One thing that made me very happy and satisfied with Baconit is the flip page view. When you are done with reading a page, you can flip through the screen to read the next post. This is quite helpful during /r/awww. I simply loved the fact that I didn’t have to go back screen and tap every time. Even if the image is opened in imgur, the flip screen mode still works!
One of the major features of Baconit is that you can pin any subreddit to your start screen of Windows Phone so that you can see the posts directly from there. If you upload a post and you want to follow the comments and karma points you get, you can pin the post to the main screen too!
Found a favorite post and you want to save it for some other time? That you can do using the app. The saved posts are kept in the saved list on Reddit and you can enjoy these stories later and share it with your friends through any of the social networks, email or SMS.
I honestly couldn’t find anything wrong with the app and trust me, I worked really hard on finding one. Although, sometimes and I strictly mean very rarely, the app closed by itself when I tried to save the post to my mobile. The odds of that happening is too low. Other than that, it is a purely fantastic app.
Overall, this is a fabulous app to browse through Reddit and I literally can’t find a reason why not to use it. Baconit is loaded with excellent features and it hardly crashes plus it is absolutely free. I give it a 9/10.
