Like any other person, I spend a lot of my free time playing games on my mobile. I was on the look out for a new game when I came across Pencil Blade. One thing I should probably mention is that it is exactly like Fruit Ninja.
What made me download this game is that it has a very catchy interface. Even though it is the same as Fruit Ninja, people don’t seem to mind. I know this as a fact because I saw the ratings and reviews and it is actually very persuasive. Now, let me give you a gist about why this game is pretty cool.
What’s It All About?
So, what is it all about? The fruits and vegetables start flying in the screen and the objective of the game is to slash the fruits. But beware, there are bombs and if you try to cut that too, the game ends there. The fruits flies randomly along with the bombs and sometimes, you have to sacrifice the fruits for the sake of the bombs.
You can cut more than one fruit at a time and the more skilled you are at cutting multiple fruits at a time, the more points you get. A little heads up though, the game is not really based on the points but rather, it is based on the number of fruits you cut. And hey, there are funky bananas and some weird fruits too. You get extra points for that and before you know it, you will be spending a lot of time playing this game.
Sometimes, the whole screen is filled with flying fruits that you start slashing across the screen randomly and quickly The good thing is, the app traces your moves precisely and it is very smooth. It doesn’t lag at all.
The interface is what that actually caught my attention. It has a parchment or a textured paper-ish background with a bunch of cuts. When you think about it, it is really nice. The fruits looks hand drawn with colored pencils. Nothing fancy and that is what makes this look very attractive. It is completely refreshing and new.
In the home screen of Pencil Blade, there are icons to play the game. I kept tapping on it and nothing happened whatsoever. Only then I realized I had to swipe through the icon to play the game. Nice touch, right? I’m honestly not sure if it is available in Fruit Ninja.
The fruits are not filled with colors as they there are just outlines. Ergo, it is not very colorful and bright but rather subtle. The player could never confuse the fruits with the bomb because the bomb constantly fumes and one could hardly miss that.
Multiple Game Plays
Pencil Blade offers three game play types. Classic, Crazy and Gangnam style. Though the way you play the game is the same, there are different game objectives in each of the mode.
Each one is interesting to play and since it a simple game, without any game plays, it would be a bit boring. Let you give you a little idea about all the game play it offers.
The Classic Mode
Let me start with the classic mode. In the game at first, the frequency of the number of fruits that fly on the screen is low. After about ten seconds or so, a lot of fruits appears and so do the bombs.
When you accidentally cut the bombs, the screen explodes and the game is over. You are provided with three lives and bombs doesn’t use up the lives but rather ends the game.
But when you leave a fruit to reach the bottom without slashing it, you lose a life. It is tricky since a bomb might fly among a bunch of fruits and there is a huge possibility of leaving some of the fruits. So, it is pure skill to not leave any fruits behind.
And hey, sometimes a random thing falls from the top of the screen and when you touch it, you get flash banged and ergo, you end up leaving a lot of fruits.
The Crazy Mode
In the crazy mode, you are given 60 seconds. The objective of the game is to cut as many fruits as possible. The game keeps track of the fruits and each fruit is given one point.
When you cut a bomb, you lose 10 points and there is a chance of getting negative scores here. Plus, the screen bombs up and you won’t see any fruits flying for a second or two.
But luckily there are no lives involved. Leave a fruit and cut the bomb, nothing is going to happen. Until you play it, you have no idea how satisfying it is to plan at the second to swipe at an angle that will slash 5 fruits at a time. You are awarded generously for that.
Gangnam style is the free fall mode — I don’t know what it is called exactly. Like the song, it is exhilarating and fun to play this mode. And hey, while you play, you can listen to Gangnam style in the background.
There are no bombs and no lives involved. No timers either. All you have to do is use Pencil Blade as a therapeutic thing and cut off all the flying fruits.
If you have a working internet connection in your mobile, you can upload the scores and see where you stand among a bunch of strangers who play the game.
I know, I know. Pencil Blade is like fruit Ninja, but it has a fresh interface and it is actually quite fun to play it, trust me. It is a free app and there are a lot of game play. Great game to play when you have absolutely nothing to do.
