The launch of Windows 8.1 is finally here! Today is the day you’re able to download the final version of Windows 8.1 for the very first time through the Windows Store. You’re able to go and grab it right now, for free if you’re a current Windows 8 user.

Microsoft announced the news on their blog at 4 AM PDT (Midnight in New Zealand) to signal the roll out of the new OS. The update brings a number of big enhancements to Windows 8’s modern interface, a start button for the task bar and further multiple monitor improvements over the last version.

To get the update, either head over to the Windows website on a Windows 8 PC, click this link or just open the Windows Store and there will be a large button offering the update to you. Click it to get started and install the update – no files or applications will be lost in the process. Bear in mind the download is a whopping 3.6 GB so it might take a while to download, especially considering the initial rush.

The bad news is if you’re on the Windows 8.1 Preview you will need to perform a fresh install and won’t be able to keep your applications and data. Ah, the perils of beta testing. Happy upgrading!
