Weekly Poll: How Many Monitors Are On Your Desk?

Ahh. Multi monitors. You either get them or you don’t. I confess I didn’t get them till I actually got to use them in a real world scenario. Your IDE on one monitor and the browser or debugger on the other? Or research material on one monitor and an empty WordPress post page on the other? Pure bliss!

This week I’d like to know how many monitors you have on your desk, both at work and at home. Has a multi-display setup improved your efficiency? Laptop users, do you dock your laptop with an external display? I’d love to hear from you!

So vote away and as always, we’d love to hear your thoughts – simply post a comment below!

Right now I’ve got 3 monitors. To my left, a 21″ running windows 7. This is my windows testing machine breaking bad episode watching machine. In the center is a 21″ imac, and to the right is the 23″ monitor attached to the imac.

As an information architect, I often have omnigraffle up on the main monitor, and then source material/whatever/notes up on my right monitor. As an HTML/CSS coder, I’ll have sublime up on main, browser up on right. Doing photoshop work, I’ll keep inspirational material up on the right.

I use the windows machine for CaseComplete, I use it for testing IE, I use it to watch movies and TV shows while working.

I have two laptops as weird as that may sound. One’s old and one’s new. I use the new one for more intensive tasks and watching HD movies and I use the old one for browsing the web, checking e-mail, and reading.

I use three monitors at home where I don’t really need it, but I like it (I used to have two, but hated it being non-symmetrical, so I added a third and would never go back).
At work, I use only one as imposed by the work place – I hate it and I get claustrophobic. There is where I really need more than one and it’s painful.
I think the first keys on my keyboard to die will be the Alt & Tab!

I’m primarily a laptop user. The common 1366×768 resolution is annoying at times, but at my home desk I connect my laptop to a 23 inch LCD monitor, which boosts the screen space dramatically. This works great for programming and web development – I have an IDE or editor up on one screen, and a web browser to documentation up on the other. Way better than frequently flipping through windows.
