Firefox users everywhere, rejoice! Mozilla has announced that they are making available an early preview version of their browser that was built from the ground up for Windows 8.

The browser is an early alpha build called Aurora and the announcement comes slightly after the company announced that the final build of Firefox for Windows 8 has slipped to early 2014.

Over the last year we’ve seen the quality of Windows 8 applications gradually increase and now that Windows 8.1 is on the horizon, we’re starting to see some unique apps that really set the platform apart.

Newseen is one of these apps, which has a unique view on how to read news and does the job much better than many fully-fledged RSS readers on the internet.

Video conversion has become a popular topic with me lately. I purchased a Google TV a few months ago, using the device to retire my old HTPC, which ran Windows 7 with Media Center set to launch upon startup. The problem is this — not all of my ripped DVD’s were in a format recognized by Plex, which now serves my home media to the living room.

Since purchasing the Vizio Co-Star, I have been slowly but surely working my way through the re-encoding of almost all of our movies, most of which had been ripped to ISO files in order to retain all of the menus and extras. Unfortunately, Google TV will not allow me to keep those options, but this is not the end of the world — I do not really need them, it was just a nice touch.

My latest experiment is using TEncoder, which is a powerful tool for converting video and audio files from one format to another. The app holds a lot promise, but may not work for every need — more on that later.

One of the most annoying issues I have faced lately with my laptop is that it gets overheated. The most common reason why it happens is that nowadays, laptops are equipped with fast processors and hard drives. When they work in a small space, they end up reaching a high temperature.

I found out about this issue when my laptop automatically went to sleep after getting overheated. Since then, I started looking for a handy utility that can help me manage my laptop’s temperature and find out if its overheating. If you dont manage the temperature of your laptop, you may end up with a dead hard drive from which you cannot recover any data at all. It can even cause a greater damage to your processor as well which may not be the most cheapest thing to repair.

To make things easier, I started looking for apps that can help me manage my laptop’s temperature and ended up using BatteryCare.

GIFs are considered an important part of the internet. They are being used extensively on websites as buttons, icons, banners, advertisements and what not. If you are wondering about how to create those images, you should know that creating GIF images may not be one of the most easiest things to do. If you search the internet you will come across a number of tools that can help you create GIF images using GIMP and Photoshop as well but it can be a very time consuming task especially when you don’t have any experience in using these programs.

In case of web applications, they may be better when it comes to creating GIF animations but they may not provide you with as many features as a desktop tool and may not be as simple as you think. Today, we came across a very handy desktop utility, GIFCam that allows users to create animated GIFs from their desktop. It’s more of a screen recording app that records your actions and save them as GIF images.

Google, Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo – all major software giants have a version of instant messenger. They are all free and have millions of loyal users. Many among of us have a problem with this picture. Our friends used to be scattered across all these IM platforms and there used to be an era where you’ll have to literally log into multiple apps to chat with your friends from various networks.

Trillian was the first multi platform chat client I encountered some eight years ago. It always had a free version and it has evolved a lot over all these years. Much has changed they way the app looks now and is way cooler than it used to be. Join me after the break to check out the newest avatar of Trillian.

Evolve is a small independently developed and published free client and website built for serious gamers.

Evolve is not game distribution software. It’s not set out to be a commercial program. It isn’t spammed with advertisements. It’s meant to work alongside other software. Unlike Steam, Origin, Battle.net, Uplay, or most other programs out there, you can use it to centralise your entire gaming experience. Although often confused with them, it isn’t a replacement for any of the programs listed above.

As of right now, there are probably hundreds, if not thousands, of workers developing new software and upgrading current ones such as the Microsoft Office applications. While improvements in these applications do allow us to produce higher quality work, it is hard for users of the previous versions to adapt and be able to navigate through the various interfaces to use certain features (e.g. preparing a footnote or writing a proper function). For those of you who wish for a single button that you could simply press to make your life easier, you should check out KeyRocket.

Let’s admit it. Going digital has brought in a ton of content overload. Photos, music, videos – every single format type easily consumes tens of gigabytes of hard disk space. Navigating through the hundreds of files to locate the ones you are looking for using a standard file explorer is a painful process.

When it comes music, there plenty of apps that do an amazing job organizing the digital music library. Winamp, iTunes and our very Windows Media player are some worth mentioning. I heard good things about MediaMonkey and thought it would be fun to try this media manager out. Read about my tryst with this media manager after the break.
